THE JAPA SYNDROME WILL CONTINUE TILL WE FIX NIGERIA – AY MAKUN

Written by on January 26, 2024

Nigerian comedian AY Makun has waded into the ongoing conversation about the mass exodus of Nigerians from the country, a phenomenon popularly known as the “Japa syndrome.”

Taking to his social media platform on January 25, 2024, AY acknowledged the undeniable reality of Nigerians increasingly seeking what they perceive as greener pastures abroad. He expressed empathy for those yearning to leave, citing the harsh realities of a failing system, rampant poverty, and a general sense of hopelessness that plagues many.

While recognizing that “Japa” might not have been the go-to solution in the past, AY emphasized how the current wave of emigration reflects a deep-seated frustration and weariness among Nigerians who feel they have no choice but to look elsewhere for a better life. He poignantly stated:

“More and more people are still searching for that chance to leave Nigeria in pursuit of greener pastures. It’s the unfortunate reality we face. While it’s easy to blame the system, that doesn’t erase the sadness of it all. Back in the day, ‘Japa’ wasn’t the answer.”

The renowned comedian didn’t shy away from highlighting the role of a dysfunctional system in pushing Nigerians towards the exit door. He acknowledged the tragic truth of the situation, underscoring the fact that the “Japa syndrome” is likely to persist until a collective effort is made to address and rectify the profound challenges Nigerians grapple with daily.

AY concluded his message with a call to action:

“But countless people are simply exhausted and disillusioned, desperate for any escape from this relentless madness fueled by poverty. The Japa syndrome won’t stop until we, as a nation, come together and find a way to fix Nigeria, to make it a place where hope and opportunity bloom once again.”
