On August 31, 2021, Grammy-winning Nigerian superstar Wizkid’s groundbreaking single ‘Essence,’ featuring Tems, became the most searched song on music search platform Shazam.
Earlier that day, on the aforementioned date, Shazam’s Twitter account stated, “Congratulations, @wizkidayo!! #Essence is the most Shazamed song in the United States right now.”
This comes on the heels of Wizkid’s celebrated Justin Bieber-assisted remix becoming the first Nigerian song to chart in the top 20 of the Billboard 200, peaking at No. 16. The song climbed 28 places from 44 to achieve this feat. Wizkid’s ‘Essence’ becomes the second African song to reach a milestone on Shazam in less than a year.
Master KG’s ‘Jerusalema’ became the most Shazamed song in the world in Q4 2020.
